Day 10 – a Black Book:
A black book is like saying the little black dress. It’s a book that makes an impressive impact visually and for the content between its covers. I chose Trumpet by Jackie Kay. I haven’t read this one yet but I’m very familiar with Kay’s beautiful poetry and Red Dust Road and am sure it’s very good. I have to thank Claire over at Word by Word for introducing her to me and Kesha from ke-sha Forsaken for gifting it to me. I immediately thought of Trumpet for today’s challenge. It’s a perfect fit.
“In the 1950s and 60s, Scottish jazz musician Joss Moody was celebrated for his sound: everyone who heard it imagined they knew the man behind it. But with the remarkable fact uncovered upon his death, it becomes clear that no one but his wife, Millie, knew him at all. A tapestry of brilliantly realized voices from Joss’s world reveals the startling and poignant story of Joss and Millie: how they built a love, a family, a life out of a complex, dazzling lie.” (back cover of Trumpet Pantheon edition)
What’s your black book of the day?
Hmmm…I went with The Polished Hoe by Austin Clarke. Here’s a link to see the cover: http://www.amazon.com/The-Polished-Hoe-A-Novel/dp/0060557621 Although I didn’t care for the book (the patois and circuitous writing style was confusing and taxing, imo), I thought the cover was beautifully done.
OAN: Did you see that Oprah chose Ruby by Cynthia Bond as her next book club 2.0 feature?
Beautiful cover! Haven’t heard of it before. Not so sure I’d do well with the patois and the circuitous writing style though. Yes I heard about Oprah choosing Ruby. Lord! I’m interested to hear how that’s going ti go down. Ruby is really not a book for everyone.
Oh, I like this cover!
Thanks Terri! Me too. I bought it from Thrift Books and I wanted a hardcover. As soon as I saw this one I had to have it. It’s not a pristine copy but it’s pretty good.
Beautiful book Deidre and thanks for reminding me I have a beautiful hardcover collection of her short stories still to read Reality, Reality. Thanks for the mention 🙂
You’re welcome! So many books, so little time…
